InPassing Privacy Policy

InPassing is developed by Chris Weiss. This policy explains how the InPassing app and getinpassing.com handle information. Contact us at chris@getinpassing.com with privacy questions or requests.

Our approach

InPassing does not require an InPassing account. We do not operate a server that receives your reading library or learning history, and the app does not include advertising or third-party analytics SDKs. We do not sell your personal information or use your reading for targeted advertising. Some optional features contact external services, as explained below.

Reading, translation, and learning

The app processes page text, imported DRM-free EPUBs, translations, reading progress, vocabulary familiarity, and quizzes on your device. Translation uses Apple's on-device Translation framework; language resources and voices may need to be downloaded from Apple. InPassing does not send page or book text to a developer-operated translation service or AI service.

Book files, bookmarks, browser history, cached translations, and review passages are kept on your device. Selected progress and preferences can sync through your private iCloud storage as described below. Websites you visit still receive normal browser requests; local translation does not make web browsing anonymous.

Streak import and reminders

When you select a screenshot to import a streak, Apple's Vision framework reads it on your device. InPassing does not upload or persist a copy of the selected image. Temporary image data is released after recognition; your original photo remains wherever you stored it. The app saves the streak number, language, and source label you confirm. Streaks, streak import, savers, and reminders do not require Pro.

Reminder notifications are scheduled locally with your permission. Notification permission is managed separately on each device.

Private iCloud syncing

When iCloud is available, InPassing uses Apple's private iCloud storage to sync preferences, aggregate learning progress, vocabulary familiarity, streak state, speech settings, and reading positions for matching books. Book matching uses a fingerprint of the book rather than uploading its contents. This feature uses your Apple Account; it does not create an InPassing account or give the developer access to your private CloudKit database.

Page text, browsing URLs, book files, cached translations, review and quiz passages, and streak-import images are not included in InPassing's learning-data sync. Device backups and operating-system services are separately controlled by your Apple settings.

Today: location, weather, news, events, and calendar

Location and calendar access are optional. You can use the reading app without granting either permission.

With location permission, InPassing obtains a device-reported location for the Today brief. It requests a low-accuracy location, but the operating system may supply more precise coordinates depending on your device settings. Apple receives location requests for place names and weather. Local news requests send your city, region, and country to Google News. Nearby event requests, when the events service is configured, send coordinates rounded to two decimal places and the requested date to Ticketmaster. These providers also receive connection information, such as an IP address, when your device contacts them.

InPassing does not save your location as a location history. Public event results may be cached on the device for the day and are replaced or cleared on a later Today load. We do not receive these requests on our own server. Providers handle their request information under their own policies: Apple Privacy, Google Privacy, and Ticketmaster Privacy.

With calendar permission, InPassing reads today's events, including titles, times, and any event location, to display and narrate your brief. These details are processed in memory and are not saved by InPassing or sent to the weather, news, or events providers. The app does not alter your calendar. Your calendar provider's own syncing remains governed by your account settings.

Browsing and external services

When you open a website, search the web, download a public-domain book, load a site's icon, or follow an external link, your device communicates with the relevant provider. Websites may receive URLs, search terms, IP addresses, cookies, and information you choose to enter. Searches typed into the browser are sent to the search provider. These services have their own privacy policies, and their practices are not controlled by InPassing.

The browser stores website data such as cookies and caches locally. You can manage it through Settings → Website data. Optional content blocking reduces some advertising and tracking requests but does not guarantee that every tracker is blocked.

Subscriptions and offer codes

Apple processes InPassing Pro subscriptions, free trials, offer-code redemptions, payments, and refunds. The app uses Apple's verified purchase information, including product, transaction, expiration, and subscription-status information, to determine whether Pro is active. A limited entitlement cache supports recently verified access while offline.

We do not receive your payment-card details. Apple may provide the developer with sales, subscription, and diagnostic reports under Apple's reporting and privacy settings. Starting a trial or redeeming an offer requires your agreement through Apple. Importing a streak by itself does not start a paid subscription.

Diagnostics and support

The app keeps bounded diagnostic logs locally to help investigate problems. Logs can include device and operating-system information, app events, browsing URLs or paths, and error details. Sensitive URL components are redacted where supported; please review any export before sharing it. Logs are not automatically uploaded by InPassing.

If you email us or choose to send a diagnostic export, we receive your email address, the message, and any attachments you send. We use that information to respond and troubleshoot, and keep it only as needed to handle the request, maintain necessary support records, or meet legal obligations. Email and hosting providers may process information on our behalf to deliver those services. You can request deletion by contacting us.

Your choices, retention, and deletion

InPassing retains local reading and learning data until you remove it, reset it, or uninstall the app, subject to cache cleanup and automatic expiry of review passages. Diagnostic logs are limited in size and older entries are rotated out.

Use Settings → Data & privacy controls to reset your learner model, delete review passages, reset streaks, or erase learning data. Resets of synced data propagate to your other devices as they reconnect. Small reset markers may remain to prevent an offline device from restoring deleted data. Imported books and website data have separate deletion controls; erasing learning data does not delete your original files.

Deleting the app does not necessarily delete private iCloud data or device backups. Manage those through your Apple Account's iCloud settings. Revoke location, calendar, or notification permission through your device's privacy and notification settings. Manage or cancel subscriptions through your Apple Account; deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

For personal information you have sent to us, you may request access, correction, or deletion at chris@getinpassing.com. Depending on where you live, additional privacy rights may apply, including the ability to complain to your local privacy authority. We cannot access or delete data held only on your device or in your private iCloud storage on your behalf.

Website

The getinpassing.com website serves information about InPassing. Hosting services may process ordinary request information, such as IP address, requested page, browser information, and time of access, to deliver and protect the site. We do not use advertising or analytics scripts on this website. Links to external websites are governed by those sites' policies.

Children

InPassing is a general-audience reading tool with access to the open web and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly solicit personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us so we can address it.
